Walker Hall Winery

The "W" Line

At Walker Hall Winery, we are blessed with a Lakeside Niagara location that yields the finest quality grapes. In the cellar we make every effort to highlight this quality and bring it to fruition in the bottle. We are committed to minimal intervention and gentle handling, from the harvest to bottling. In this way, our wines can best express the essence of their terroir, or origin. The goal is to create elegant wines that are also rich in flavor. The W Line of wines is our entry level wine - typically unwooded, crisp and fresh on the palette.

W Merlot

W Merlot

Merlot is the acknowledged "king" of red grapes in Niagara. Merlot has long been available in Niagara. Wines made from Merlot show lovely cherry-like aromas with hints of their sibling Cabernet's herbaceousness. Because Merlot's tannins are softer than those found in Cabernet, the wines are drinkable at an earlier age than most Cabernets. At the same time, Merlots reward aging by gaining finesse and complexity much as Cabernets do. At Walker Hall the estate merlot harvest was late in the fall. Low crop loads produced grape clusters with medium sized berries and ripe flavors, yielding wines of impressive depth, concentration and structure. The fruit was surprisingly excellent, after much late summer rainfall. The result displayed ripe blackberry and plum aromas. The fruit added a bright, black cherry character with a finale of crisp acidity.
W Riesling

W Riesling

Riesling is a variety which is highly "terroir-expressive", meaning that the character of Riesling wines is clearly influenced by the wine's place of origin. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying flowery, almost perfumed aromas, as well as high acidity. Riesling is to Canada what Sauvignon Blanc is to New Zealand. As Canada’s Flagship varietal, Riesling is showcased at Walker Hall through its W Riesling brand. The wine is marked by pronounced fruit-driven aromatics with characters of ripe, juicy peach, mandarin orange and hints of spicy ginger. The warm year also developed wonderful tropical flavors that are rich and full in mouthfell.
